At the beginning of this month I travelled to Malta for a weeks holiday with my boyfriend. We stayed in Sliema, on the east of island, in the ST Bayview hotel. I’m really glad we chose this hotel as it had amazing views over the bay and across to Malta’s capital city Valletta. Sliema is a busy town and has loads of restaurants and shops. In fact, I wished I had more room in my suitcase as Sliema is a really good spot for shopping with lots of familiar stores like Zara and Accesorize and other local and European stores.
We took the ferry over to Valetta and spent the day wandering the narrow streets and visiting the stunning churches and historic buildings. Valletta is also a really good place for shopping and has plenty of restaurants, cafes, and bars. It also has several large squares where there was always something going on and it was great to sit and people watch, or there were often musicians and dancers.
We decided to go back to Valletta on an evening for food and drinks. We preferred Valletta on an evening to Sliema, which was quite busy, and found that Valletta was much more relaxing. We ate at a restaurant called the City Lounge and had the most beautiful garlic mussels followed by fillet steak. We loved the restaurant so much we went back again on our last night and ordered the exact same. The restaurant has a roof terrace with a great view and a terrace in the square below. It was an amazing to be able to sit outside in a relaxed setting with great food and watch the world go by, with a few drinks as well.
The highlight of our holiday was the boat trip we took to the Blue Lagoon on the island of Comino. The trip lasted all day and gave us a great view of the sea before stopping in a tiny bay on Gozo island for a swim before lunch. The bay was beautiful and, although I don’t often swim, it was so much fun swimming in the sea and exploring the caves beneath the cliffs. In the afternoon we stopped at the Blue Lagoon where we went for a ride on a speed boat (which was terrifying but my boyfriend loved it) and another swim. I’d heard a lot about the Blue Lagoon and it was somewhere I really wanted to visit but I was disappointed in how busy it was. The shoreline was full of people as it’s very popular with tourists and locals but I enjoyed it once we swam out into the Lagoon where it was quieter.
I would totally recommend Malta for anyone who loves an alternative to a traditional beach holiday. I found there was so many beautiful places to explore, with cities full of history and culture, a beautiful coastline, and lots of bars and restaurants for evenings out. It suited my boyfriend and I really well and it’s definitely somewhere I want to go back to.
